Embark on a journey through the corridors of procurement expertise as we sit down with one of our CIPS tutors, Terri Hudson MCIPS, boasting a wealth of experience spanning over 30 years across public, private, and third-sector organisations! Dive into Terri’s passion for teaching CIPS, where expertise meets education, and explore the pearls of wisdom she shares with aspiring procurement professionals.
What is your background?
Over the last 30 years, I have worked in public, private, and third-sector organisations in various procurement roles. My initial employment was in retail back in the early 1990s. Later, I transitioned into the Public Sector in the mid-2000s and, more recently, into the third sector. Procurement has been my professional focus since leaving school, and I foresee no change in that trajectory!
How did you transition into tutoring and the role you are in now?
I established my own business where I recruited and trained individuals. Teaching seemed a natural fit for me, and I enjoyed imparting my CIPS knowledge to fellow procurement professionals. In 2017, I applied to a London-based University with a passion for Category Management, Risk Management, and Sustainability, securing an exciting guest lecturing spot!
What does your role involve?
When not tutoring at Aspire, I serve as a Managing Consultant for a Procurement Consultancy. In this capacity, I collaborate with diverse clients on Procurement Transformation, Resource Augmentation, and Savings Delivery. This role entails leading client engagements and the teams deployed to each account, ensuring excellent outcomes. Specialising in Construction Projects, I also lead my own procurements, translating client requirements into procurement strategies for optimal results.
What do you enjoy most about tutoring?
Teaching CIPS allows me to meet students from varied backgrounds and industries. However, my greatest enjoyment stems from assisting students in their professional development and growth.
What advice would you give to somebody considering studying CIPS?
Go for it; you won’t regret it! Pursuing CIPS not only enhances employment prospects with employers recognising it as a standard but also provides the theoretical foundation to comprehend the rationale behind our actions as procurement professionals.
As I reflect on my journey, having traversed the evolution of procurement dynamics from retail to the intricate realms of procurement consultancy, tutoring CIPS has become a natural extension of my passion. It allows me to connect with diverse individuals and contribute to their growth.
