The Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is an introduction to the knowledge required to develop as a Project Manager. The qualification will provide: Awareness of the terminology required for project management Understanding the profession and its principles How to make a high level and quality contributions to projects.

    Understand the distinctions between projects and business as usual, the definition of 'project management', its key purpose, and explanations of 'programme management' and 'portfolio management' in relation to project management. Additionally, the potential application of PESTLE analysis by project managers is explored for strategic insights.

    Understand project life cycles

    Understand the phases of a typical linear project life cycle, typical iterative project life cycle and define the term 'hybrid life cycle' and 'extended project life cycle'.

    Understand the roles and responsibilities within project

    Outline project management roles and responsibilities (including the project sponsor, project manager, project governance, project team members, end users, product owner and the project management office.

    Understand project management planning

    Students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary for successful planning, execution, and monitoring of project deployments, ensuring alignment with project goals and stakeholder expectations.

    Understand project scope management

    Students will explore the use of product breakdown structures (PBS) and work breakdown structures (WBS) to visualise scope requirements effectively. Additionally, students will outline the utilisation of cost breakdown structures (CBS), organisational breakdown structures (OBS), and responsibility assignment matrices (RAM) by project managers for scope management.

    Understand resource, scheduling and optimisation in a project

    Students will define 'time boxing' and explore its application in project scheduling. They will also outline resource optimisation techniques such as resource levelling and resource smoothing, providing insights into effective resource management strategies. Furthermore, students will define 'procurement strategy', emphasising its importance in project execution and vendor management. Students will develop proficiency in scheduling techniques, resource allocation, and procurement strategies essential for successful project delivery.

    Understand project risk and issue management in the context of a project

    Students will delve into the crucial realm of risk and issue management within projects. They will understand the purpose of risk management, recognising its significance in mitigating potential threats and maximising project success. Moreover, students will outline the stages of a typical risk management process, covering identification, analysis, response, and closure.

    Understand quality in the context of a project

    Students will define 'quality planning' and 'quality control', outlining their significance in proactively establishing quality standards and monitoring adherence throughout project execution. Moreover, students will outline the purpose of 'quality assurance', focusing on its role in verifying that quality standards are consistently met across project activities.

    Understand communication in the context of a project

    Students will explore the intricacies of effective communication within project management. They will outline the advantages and disadvantages of various communication methods, including face-to-face, physical, and virtual channels, understanding their suitability in different project scenarios. Additionally, students will define the contents of a comprehensive communication plan, identifying key elements essential for facilitating clear and efficient communication throughout the project lifecycle.

    Understand leadership and teamwork within a project

    Students will explore the dynamics of team leadership and development within project management. They will examine how a project team leader can influence team performance, identifying strategies for motivation, delegation, and fostering collaboration.

Entry Requirements

The Project Fundamentals qualification is for those wanting a broad understanding of the principles of the profession. You don't need any prior knowledge or experience for this qualification.

Project Fundamentals Qualification Examinations

The Fundamentals qualification exam consists of 60 multiple-choice questions and lasts for one hour. You have the flexibility to take the exam either online in a classroom setting with your accredited provider or remotely from home with our live invigilator.
