Why Soft Skills Are Harder to Learn Than Technical Skills – And Why Apprenticeships Matter

Most professionals are promoted because they’re technically strong.

They understand the processes.
They know the systems.
They deliver results.

But leading people, influencing stakeholders, and managing performance require a completely different set of skills – and these are far harder to develop.

That’s where apprenticeships make the difference.

Technical Skills Can Be Taught. Professional Behaviours Must Be Developed.

Technical knowledge follows structure. You can study procurement principles, project methodologies, or operational frameworks and pass an exam.

Soft skills – communication, leadership, decision-making, resilience, stakeholder management – take time. They require coaching, feedback and real workplace application.

This is why many managers struggle. They’ve mastered the technical aspects of their role but haven’t had structured development in how to lead others.

Apprenticeships close that gap.

Apprenticeships Build Capability, Not Just Knowledge

At Aspire Procurement Training, our apprenticeships are designed to develop both technical expertise and professional behaviours.

Because real progression doesn’t come from knowledge alone – it comes from confidence, accountability and leadership capability.

We provide a range of industry-recognised apprenticeships, many including accreditation from leading professional bodies such as CIPS and APM.

We are also proud to be rated “Good” by OFSTED, reflecting our commitment to high-quality training, expert support and strong learner outcomes.

Apprenticeships in Procurement and Supply

Our procurement pathways develop professionals from entry level through to senior strategic roles:

These programmes combine technical procurement knowledge with leadership behaviours, commercial awareness and stakeholder management skills.

Learners don’t just understand procurement – they learn how to operate confidently within it.

Leadership & Project Management Apprenticeships

We also offer apprenticeships that strengthen management and delivery capability across organisations:

Our Associate Project Manager apprenticeship aligns with APM standards, while leadership pathways focus on practical management capability – not just theory.

These programmes are ideal for aspiring or newly appointed managers who need structured development in leading teams and delivering results.

How Our Apprenticeships Are Delivered

We believe apprenticeships should be structured, supportive and measurable.

Each apprentice:

  • Completes an initial assessment, setting objectives and timelines
  • Follows a tailored Training Plan agreed with their employer
  • Receives expert tuition and guided skills development
  • Is supported by a dedicated skills coach
  • Participates in formal progress reviews every 12 weeks (with their line manager present)
  • Completes an End Point Assessment
  • Achieves a final grade of Pass or Distinction

Central employer teams are kept informed throughout via management reports and review meetings led by an Aspire skills coach or mentor (dependent on apprenticeship).

This structured approach ensures development is consistent, visible and aligned to organisational goals.

Why Apprenticeships Work

Apprenticeships are powerful because they develop professionals in the context of their real job.

Learners apply knowledge immediately.
They receive feedback while performing their role.
They build confidence alongside competence.

The result?

Professionals who are technically capable and commercially aware – but also confident communicators, effective leaders and trusted decision-makers.

Investing in Long-Term Capability

In procurement, operations and project environments, technical skills may secure the role.

Leadership capability sustains it.

Apprenticeships provide the structured development many professionals never receive – and that organisations increasingly need.

At Aspire Procurement Training, we develop well-rounded professionals who can deliver results and lead people effectively.

Because the strongest organisations aren’t built on technical knowledge alone.

They’re built on capability.
