The CIPS qualifications framework is designed to take learners from foundation knowledge all the way to senior-level expertise. But with multiple levels available, one of the most common questions we hear is: “Where should I start?”.
Choosing the right entry point depends on your current experience, role, and future ambitions. Here’s a breakdown of each level to help you decide where you fit.
CIPS Level 2 Certificate in Procurement and Supply
This is the very first step in the CIPS journey, designed for complete beginners. Aspire is proud to be one of the few training providers offering this qualification. It’s ideal for school leavers or those brand new to procurement who want to build a solid foundation before progressing further. Click here to find out more.
CIPS Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Procurement and Supply
Best suited for those who are new to procurement or working in a junior role. If you’re just starting your career, or your current role includes procurement tasks but you haven’t had formal training, CIPS Level 3 is the perfect foundation. It introduces the key principles of procurement, the role it plays in organisations and gives you the vocabulary and confidence to progress further.
CIPS Level 4 Diploma in Procurement and Supply
CIPS Level 4 is the most common starting point for professionals already working in procurement and is the highest entry point to studying CIPS. It’s designed for those with some experience – perhaps as a Procurement Officer, Assistant Buyer, or Administrator – who are ready to take on more responsibility. Graduates may also enter directly at this level. You’ll cover the whole of the Procurement Cycle, learning how to source the market, manage bids, negotiate, award contracts and manage suppliers. The Diploma is highly sought after by employers looking for adept procurement managers.
CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Supply
Level 5 is aimed at those already managing teams or categories and who are expected to manage procurement teams, key suppliers and significant contracts. Candidates must have achieved their CIPS Level 4 Diploma before they can move onto this level. This programme builds advanced skills in project and contract management, as well as financial performance management and risk analysis.
CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply
CIPS Level 6 is for senior procurement leaders. If you are responsible for category through to global strategy, managing complex supplier networks, or influencing board-level decisions, this is the qualification for you. It prepares learners to apply for Chartered Professional status and positions procurement as a strategic driver of organisational success.
So, Which Entry Point is Right for You?
For school leavers, we’d advise starting at CIPS Level 2. If you’re new to procurement, we’d recommend starting at CIPS Level 3. For those already working in procurement (with two or more years’ experience), then CIPS Level 4 should be a suitable entry point. However, if you are unsure, don’t worry – Aspire can assess your experience and help you choose the most suitable level. Click here to book a call.
Available Study Methods
At Aspire, our most popular study method is classroom learning. We run sessions in Warrington, Hull, London, Kent, and Carlisle, giving learners the chance to connect face-to-face with tutors and peers, learning from shared experiences and group activities. For those who prefer flexibility, the same classroom experience is also available online, making it accessible no matter where you are based.
In addition to classroom learning, we provide other ways to study that can be tailored to your lifestyle. Some learners benefit from one-to-one personal tutoring, while others enjoy our study buddy option, which allows you to progress alongside a colleague or peer. If you prefer working at your own pace, you can choose assisted self-learning or fully self-directed study. All study methods provide access to our Digital Learning Zone. Apprenticeships with Aspire
For those looking to integrate their professional development directly into the workplace, CIPS Level 3 to CIPS Level 6 can be achieved through our apprenticeship route. This pathway not only gives you the chance to apply what you’re learning back in your organisation, it can make training more financially accessible. Apprenticeship funding is often available to employers, meaning that organisations can support staff development at little or no additional cost.
This approach benefits both the learner, who gains nationally recognised qualifications while gaining practical experience, and the employer, who develops a more skilled and capable workforce. With Aspire’s guidance, apprenticeships can be seamlessly embedded into your role, ensuring your study journey enhances both your career progression and your organisation’s procurement capability.
