CIPS Level 6: New Syllabus, Big Decisions and Funded Apprenticeships

The CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma in Procurement and Supply marks a significant point in the career of any procurement professional. As the highest level in the CIPS qualification framework, it’s designed for those aiming for strategic roles, leadership responsibilities and ultimately, MCIPS status.

But with changes to the syllabus on the way – and a funded apprenticeship route available – it’s more important than ever to understand your options.

What’s Changing?

The syllabus for CIPS Level 6 is being updated, with the new version due to be assessed from March 2026. This means anyone currently studying – or planning to start soon – should carefully consider their timeline and support needs. The upcoming changes may affect the structure, content and approach to assessment, so it’s essential to work with a provider who can offer the right guidance and flexibility.

At Aspire Procurement Training, we’ve helped hundreds of learners navigate their CIPS journey. As a long-standing CIPS Centre of Excellence, we’re here to support learners through this period of transition and beyond.

Two Pathways Available

CIPS Level 6 learners are typically experienced professionals juggling demanding jobs and busy lives. Whether you’re progressing through the CIPS route or exploring options through your employer, there are two main ways to achieve your CIPS Level 6 Procurement and Supply Professional Diploma:

1. CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma

This is the direct, qualification-led route for those who have completed CIPS Level 4 and Level 5. It offers a focused, structured path toward MCIPS accreditation.
Aspire delivers the Level 6 Diploma in a flexible way – including online and blended formats – making it easier to balance study with work and life. Check out our study methods for Level 6 here.

2. Level 6 Senior Procurement and Supply Chain Professional Apprenticeship

This is a fully funded alternative that includes the CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma as part of a wider apprenticeship programme. Apprenticeships can be funded through the Apprenticeship Levy for larger organisations, or 95% funded for small businesses through government support (known as co-funding).

This apprenticeship typically runs over 24 months and includes on-the-job learning, achieving the CIPS accreditation and completing an end-point assessment. To find out more about our Level 6 Senior Procurement and Supply Chain Professional Apprenticeship, click here.

It’s ideal for employers looking to invest in their teams, and for individuals seeking a funded route to MCIPS.

Aspire supports learners and employers from start to finish – including eligibility checks, onboarding, progress reviews and preparation for End Point Assessment. With Level 6, we also offer mentorship from a procurement professional with years’ of industry experience. Click here to find out more about our apprenticeships.

What’s the right option for you

Deciding between the diploma and the apprenticeship comes down to your circumstances. If you’re employed in a relevant role and your organisation is willing to support you, the apprenticeship can be a brilliant, cost-effective route. For others, the direct qualification path might be more suitable.

Whichever you choose, Aspire can help you take the next step with confidence.
